400 Years of History

The 1599 Geneva Bible was a milestone in our spiritual heritage: it was the first to assign chapter and verse numbers; the first “study Bible,” having copious notes in the margins. It was the first to be printed in a portable and affordable edition. This was the Bible of the common man, the primary Bible for English speaking Christians for over 100 years.

The Geneva Bible was printed nearly continuously from 1560-1644, with very little change after the 1599 edition. It has also become known as the Breeches Bible, for its translation of Genesis 3:7

Then the eyes of them both were opened, and they knewe that they were naked, and they sewed figge tree leaues together, and made them selues breeches.

This was the Bible of the Puritans and Pilgrims, the first Bible taken to America; the Bible of Shakespeare, and John Bunyan; the Bible of the great Reformers, Calvin and Knox. It has been over 400 years since this edition of the Geneva Bible was first printed.
